How to Draw Fouls in Basketball

Getting to the free throw line is one of the most efficient ways to score. Players draw fouls by being aggressive at the basket, using fakes and initiating legal contact, not by flopping.

Offensive ways to draw fouls

TechniqueHow it works
Attack the rimDrive hard; defenders reach and foul
Pump fakeGet the defender off their feet, then go up into them
Rip-throughSwing the ball through a reaching defender’s arms

Drawing charges on defense

  • Establish legal guarding position with both feet down.
  • Be outside the restricted area arc where it applies.
  • Stay square and take the contact in the chest.

What not to do

  • Flopping: exaggerating contact can draw a technical or fine at some levels.
  • Kicking legs out on jumpers, now often called an offensive foul.
  • Throwing the ball up without a real shot attempt.
