What is a Cheerleading Pom?

Cheerleading poms, often referred to as pom-poms or poms, are essential accessories used by cheerleaders to enhance their routines with vibrant colors and dynamic movements. These poms are designed to be visually striking and to accentuate the cheerleaders’ motions.

Construction of a Pom

The construction of a pom is straightforward and involves two primary components:

  • Strands: These are the colorful and flashy elements that give the pom its unique look.
  • Handle: This part helps define the shape of the pom and allows for easy handling by cheerleaders.

Measuring Poms

Poms are measured by the length and width of their strands. Understanding these measurements is crucial for selecting the right pom for different cheerleading needs.

Width Measurement

The width of the strands is determined by measuring across the strand. A general rule of thumb is: the narrower the strand, the “swishier” the pom. Here are the common widths available:

  • Narrow Streamer Poms: 3/16”
  • Wide Show Poms: 7/16”, 1/2”, 3/4”, or 1”
  • Super Wide Show Poms: 2”

Length Measurement

The length measurement is taken from where the strand attaches to the handle outward to the end of the strand. For cheerballs, which do not have handles, the measurement is from the center of the pom outward. Here’s how length affects pom shape:

  • Shorter Strands: Create a more rounded pom shape.
  • Longer Strands: Make the pom less round and more elongated.

The most popular lengths for baton handle poms are between 4 to 7 inches, while poms with other handles can range from 5 inches up to 15 inches.

Choosing the Right Pom

Selecting the right pom involves considering both the width and length of the strands, as well as the intended use in routines. Narrower strands are ideal for creating a fluid and swishy effect, while wider strands are better for bold, visual impact. Shorter strands maintain a rounded shape, which is preferred for certain styles of cheerleading, whereas longer strands offer a different aesthetic and movement dynamic.

By understanding these key elements, cheerleaders and coaches can choose the perfect poms to complement their routines and enhance their performance.
