How to Take the Snap in Football

A clean snap starts every play. Under center, the quarterback places hands under the center with pressure so the ball smacks into the top hand; in shotgun, the QB stands several yards back and catches the snap with eyes on the ball.

Under center

StepKey point
StanceFeet about shoulder-width, knees bent, close to the center
HandsThrowing hand on top pressing up, heels of the hands together, other hand below at an angle
PressureKeep steady upward pressure so the center knows where to deliver
SecureSqueeze the ball as it arrives, bring it to the chest

Shotgun and pistol

  • Stand about 4 to 5 yards (pistol) or 5 to 7 yards (shotgun) behind the center.
  • Hands ready at chest height, eyes on the ball.
  • Catch first, then scan the defense.

Avoiding fumbles

  • Don’t pull out early before the ball arrives.
  • Practice cadence so the center and QB are in sync.
  • Rehearse snaps in wet conditions.
