How to Do a Reverse Slide-by in Wrestling

The slide-by is one of the most popular techniques used on the international level. The reason it is so widely used is because it can be performed quickly and effectively with only a few simple movements. This guide will teach you how to perform this sneaky technique.

1. Post on the Shoulder

Start by placing the palm of your hand against your opponent’s shoulder on the side of his body you want to perform the slide-by on. For example, if you want to perform the move on the right side of his body, place your left hand against his right shoulder.

From here, apply steady pressure against your opponent. The purpose of this is to bait him into pushing back into you in an attempt to control a collar tie on the same side of your body as your post arm.

2. Secure a Reverse Collar Tie

When your opponent reaches toward the inside of the arm you have posted against his shoulder in an attempt to gain a collar tie, quickly switch grips to secure a reverse collar tie. To secure a reverse collar tie, reach your posted arm up over the top of your opponent’s neck and grip the opposite side of his head. For example, if you used your left hand to post against your opponent’s shoulder, reach this arm over the top of your opponent’s right arm (the arm he is using to attempt the collar tie), and grip the right side of his head.

Pull your opponent’s head down towards the shoulder of the arm he is using to attempt the collar tie. Make sure to keep his ear tight to his arm/shoulder as you perform the technique.

Hot Tip: Pressure is Key

Using your opponent’s own pressure against him is the key to this move. The goal is to get him to pressure into you so you can redirect his movement and slide his body by yours.

3. V-grip & Step

Reach your free arm underneath the arm your opponent is using to attempt the collar tie. Then secure a “V-grip” above his elbow. Do this by facing your palm towards your opponent and gripping him above the elbow using the thumb and pointer finger, otherwise known as the “V” of your hand.

As you do this, step in between your opponent’s feet with the same-side foot as the arm you are using to secure the reverse collar tie. That is, if you used your left arm for the reverse collar tie, use your left foot to step in between his feet. You don’t need to step exactly between your opponent’s feet; just step in front of his body, somewhere in between where his feet are positioned.

4. Look Away & Pull Down

Turn your head and look away from the arm your opponent is using to attempt the collar tie. Then use the grips you have on his head and arm to pull him down towards the mat. If you do this correctly, you will be able to use the pressure you created in Step 1 to pull him down.

Looking away will make it easier to slide his arm off of your head as you pull him down to the side of your body. Turn your hips slightly as you do this, and keep his head pinched to his shoulder; this will help you complete the maneuver. Then cover him to score the takedown!

Get the Feel

The slide-by is an effective technique once you understand how to use your opponent’s own pressure against him. Pay close attention to the pressure you are creating when drilling this move with a partner. Once you grasp the concept of pressure, you will be able to use this move the instant an opponent attempts to move towards you with a collar tie. Now get out there and start drilling!
