A standard outdoor running track is 400 metres long in lane 1, measured 30 cm from the inside kerb. Lanes are 1.22 m wide, and most tracks have eight or nine lanes. Field event areas have their own standard sizes for circles, runways and landing sectors.

Other features
- Staggered starts in lanes offset the longer bends in outer lanes.
- Indoor tracks are usually 200 m with banked bends.
- The steeplechase water jump is on the inside or outside of a bend.
- Pole vault boxes and landing areas follow set specifications.
- High jump runways allow an approach of at least 15 m (more at top level).
